It seems like only a few days ago Aaron Bros. Moving System, Inc. was blogging about our top picks for Chicago summer events and activities. But today, with back-to-school and Labor Day around the corner, the end of the summer season is near. But don’t worry! It’s not quite time to break out those North Face jackets yet! There are still fun things to do before summer ends in Chicago.
Picnic–Sometimes, the simplest things in life are the most enjoyable and what is easier than making some sandwiches, grabbing some drinks, and having a picnic downtown? Nothing really! Find a nice grassy area in any of the numerous parks around the city and enjoy people watching in our beautiful city. The sights and sounds of a weekend day in Chicago is enough to make you feel like summer will last forever.
South Shore Cultural Center–If you have read our previous posts, you know that the South Shore Cultural Center is near and dear to our heart. It is the “backyard” of one of our four self-storage facilities and to a few of our own residencies. We highly recommend taking an afternoon to enjoy the beach at South Shore. It is its own secluded slice of heaven with a vast amount of sand to enjoy, diligent life guards, and a feeling of privacy that is rare on the Southside.
“The Happy Show” Exhibit at Chicago Cultural Center–Who doesn’t need a reminder of the importance of being happy? Enjoy this free exhibit by Graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister that is sure to engage the eye and spirit in this large two room exhibit with playful advice, interesting research and facts about happiness, and fun installations.
North Coast Music Festival and Riot Fest–Lollapoolza may be over but there are still two music venues for the summer concert goer. Enjoy a fusion of hip-hop and alternative rock at the North Coast Music Festival happening at Union Park August 30-September 1 with headliners Passion Pit, Nas and Wu-Tang Clan; or, for the hardcore rocker, check out Riot Fest at Humboldt Park September 13-15 which features such established bands like The Violent Femmes, Blondie, and Fall Out Boy.
Divvy Bikes–Who among us isn’t enticed by the baby blue bicycles that are suddenly all around the city? The Divvy Bikes are, “a new bike sharing system featuring thousands of bikes at hundreds of stations from Andersonville to Hyde Park, available 24/7, 365 days a year.” Simply become a member online (pay $75 for an annual membership or $7 for a 24 hour pass), wait to receive your key pass and check one out at any of their multiple kiosk. The only catch is the bikes are only available for 30 minute intervals so if you plan on using it for the entire day, be prepared to have to check it in throughout the day. Otherwise, use the Divvy Bikes for a quick Lakefront ride or commute to or from the office.
Ice Cream at Navy Pier–If you haven’t already, brave the tourists and take the family out one last time to enjoy a firework show and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream before the season ends. Fireworks run every Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. and Saturday at 10:15 p.m. through Labor Day weekend.
