Tips & Tricks for a Successful Winter Move

Published on February 19th, 2018

Don’t be intimidated about moving in the midst of winter. It might not be your first choice when it comes to packing up your life and moving locations, but there are benefits to moving this type of year as well. We proudly offer our Chicago moving services year-round.

Scheduling is often more flexible in the winter because less people move in the winter, and the process will often be more personalized. If you are planning a winter move in the near future, here are some things you should keep in mind

  1. The weather! This is probably the most obvious aspect to keep in mind, but also the most important. Keep a close on those weather apps in the days before your move to see if there are any snow storms you need to worry about. If weather isn’t looking good, be flexible about changing moving dates to ensure your move goes as safely and smoothly as possible.
  2. Shovel and salt your walkways. You will be making many trips in and out of your house, so making sure your sidewalks and walkways are snow and ice-free is an important safety hazard, especially considering you’ll be lifting heavy items.
  3. Weatherproof your house. You’ll likely be tracking in excess snow and salt every time you come inside to grab something else. Investing in extra carpet remnants or using extra deconstructed cardboard boxes to protect your flooring is always a good idea during winter moves.
  4. Wear layers. You’d be surprised how quickly your body will heat up in the midst of a move. Trust us, we’re well-versed in Chicago moving services. Wearing layers is a good way to be prepared for any conditions you encounter.
  5. Get started early. Whether you’re hiring a moving company or tackling the move on your own, you’re going to want to utilize as much daylight as you can get. Not to mention the warmer weather that accompanies the daytime hours as well.
