What to Purge & What to Donate When Packing

Published by Webmaster

If you’re in the process of finding the best price moving in Chicago, you’ve come to the right place! Our Chicago moving and storage services have helped countless people in the Chicago area with their loading and unloading needs.

As you gather your packing supplies such as bubble wrap and boxes, you’ll likely realize you have a lot of things to sort through. From old kitchen supplies to clothes you may not reach for anymore; you must fill your moving boxes with items you genuinely want to bring to your next home.

Purge, Pack, or Donate?

As you begin the packing process, sort your items into three different categories: pack, purge, or donate. Ideally, you’ll start the packing process with enough time in advance so you aren’t rushing to do so immediately before the move. Packing in advance can help give you more time to think about items that you may not be fully decided about.

What to Toss & Donate

If you come across an item you may want to toss, ask yourself when’s the last time you used this item. If it’s a sentimental, one-of-a-kind item, you may want to hold onto it. If the item is old, it needs to be replaced soon, and you don’t use it often, you may want to consider purging it before your move.

Items that still have life left in them can easily be donated. Chicago has tons of donation boxes throughout the city that make it easy to pass along your unwanted items to someone in need. You can also consider finding a local homeless shelter, church, library, or animal rescue organization that can put your old items to good use.

Items that have stains, holes, odd smells or little life left are better suited for the trash.

Some examples of items you may want to donate:

  • Old appliances if they’re still usable
  • Books
  • Clothing items
  • Unused soaps or makeup products
  • Furniture
  • Kids clothing
  • Shoes
  • Pots and pans

And so many more!
