Tips for Successfully Hosting Overnight Guests

Published on October 21st, 2015 by

The busy holiday season is approaching. Will you be hosting overnight guests during the holidays?

Hosting family or friends can be a joyful yet stressful experience to undertake but don’t fret. We’ve listed our top tips for successfully hosting overnight guests to ensure they have everything they need, are comfortable in your home and YOU can be more relaxed.

The Guest Bedroom

One of the key things to remember when hosting overnight guests is that you want them to feel at home. The best way to do this is to provide some essential (and comfort) items in their room. To begin, have the guest bedroom set up with the following items:

  • A bedside/reading light
  • Cozy throw blankets
  • An extra pillow
  • Bluetooth speaker
  • Outlet strip for extra electronic plugs
  • Information on how to access and use the household Wi-Fi
  • A basket with bottled water, late snacks i.e. small bag of mixed nuts, dried fruit, fresh fruit (banana, apple, etc.)
  • Magazines and/or coffee table books
  • Robe
  • Slippers

The Guest Bathroom

Travel is always hectic but especially around the holidays. Our next key item to remember for hosting overnight guests is to provide them with those essential items they may have left behind. It’s inevitable that someone will forget something! Stock the guest bathroom with these essential toiletries. Note that depending on the number of guests and length of stay, some of these items can be provided as travel size toiletries:

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Mouthwash
  • Deodorant
  • Shampoo & conditioner
  • Body wash (neutral scent)
  • Bobby pins & elastic hair ties
  • Blow dryer
  • Body lotion (neutral scent)
  • Q-tips & cotton puffs
  • Razors & shaving cream
  • Feminine products

Bonus Points

Lastly, make sure the following items are visible and easily accessible for your overnight guests. This way they don’t have to feel as if they are “bothering” you asking where items are, etc.

  • Additional towel sets (washcloths, bath towels, etc.)
  • Additional rolls of toilet paper
  • Toilet plunger and brush (these items can be especially embarrassing to ask for)

Not only will these tips relieve your stress from your guests’ visit but they will also position you as an amazing host! So this holiday season, make it easy on yourself: create a checklist, get everything set up and successfully host your overnight holiday guests!
