How to Pack Clothes Efficiently For a Move

Published by Derrick Spencer

If your packing is done well, the moving and unpacking portions then become much less taxing. You want to do everything you can to set yourself up for a successful, time-efficient move. Packing your clothes the right way will not only save you time and stress, but will make it much easier as you unpack them in your new home.

Sort Your Clothes

When you get to your new home and it’s time to unpack and sort out your closet, you’ll be glad that your boxes are organized. Sort them however you’ll end up organizing your closet; whether it’s by season, by style, by type of clothing item, or another method you have, this will keep you from having to dig through multiple boxes to find the necessary clothing for each section. Make sure to label each box with what’s inside so you know what will go where.

Use the Correct Packing Method

Depending on the type of clothing you’re packing, you should use a different method to maximize efficiency. If you’re packing folded clothes, a regular cardboard box, suitcase, or duffel bag is best. You may want to try rolling your clothes instead of folding them to save space.

For clothes that need to be hung up, use either wardrobe boxes, drawstring trash bags, or garment bags. If you have thick coats or jackets and lots of pairs of shoes that take up too much space, consider using vacuum bags. They are bags that suck out the excess air and make big, bulky items take up much less space.

Pack all the Essentials Separately

A frustrating feeling is being in your new home and surrounded by boxes, just wanting to relax and unwind before starting to unpack, but you’re unable to find all the things you need. Pack all basic essentials that you think you’ll use your first few days in a labeled box so you don’t have to go digging around to find what you need before starting the unpacking and organizing process.

You’ll be glad you did when it’s time to brush your teeth or listen to some music or get some work done on your laptop!

Go Through Your Closet Before Packing

A move is a great reason to declutter your home. If there are clothing items in your closet you know you’re not going to wear again, packing them will only waste more time, space, and energy. Go through your clothes to determine what to keep, what to toss, and what to donate. You may be surprised at how much you have in your closet that you don’t wear anymore!
