One Month Before Your Move
Start early to avoid rushed decisions and overlooked details. A month gives you time to organize, declutter, and schedule the services you need.
- Create a folder or binder to keep track of estimates, receipts, and notes
- Decide what to keep, donate, sell, or throw away
- Start collecting packing supplies: moving boxes, tape, markers, and labels
- Schedule your moving company and confirm the moving date
- If you’re moving to Chicago, check the parking rules and reserve a spot for the moving truck if needed
- Notify your landlord (if renting) or schedule closing (if buying)
Two to Three Weeks Out
Begin packing and take care of any loose ends now that you’ve scheduled your move.
- Start packing items you don’t use every day
- Clearly label boxes by room and contents
- Arrange for the utility shut-off at your old home and set up at the new one
- Submit a change of address form with the U.S. Postal Service
- Notify your bank, employer, and other institutions of your move

- Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, and cabinet

- Supervise the loading process and answer any questions
