How to Declutter Your Home Before a Move

Published by Derrick Spencer

If you’re moving, you most likely don’t want to waste time and energy packing and dealing with unnecessary items. You don’t have to be a professional organizer to clear your home out a little. Decluttering your home and getting rid of things you’ve had for a long time can be hard, but will pay off in the end when you realize that your packing and unpacking load will be much lighter!

While our moving company in Chicago is ready and willing to pack up and move your belongings no matter how big or small the load, decluttering your physical belongings can make you feel less jumbled mentally.

Do a Little Each Day

Purging your entire house in one day sounds like it would be very overwhelming. Just like any other task, if you do a little bit day by day, your decluttering goals will sound more realistic. Do one little section each day so that the task is more manageable. Give yourself plenty of time to get enough decluttering done before the date of your move.

Do it With a Friend

You may be putting off decluttering simply because it’s not an exciting task. Inviting a friend over and doing it together could get you motivated to get started. In addition, if you have the tendency to keep things you don’t really need, a friend can keep you in check and help you toss or donate things that aren’t necessary for you to keep for the move.

Use the 90-Day Rule

A great rule of thumb to decide what to keep and what to throw away or donate is the 90-day rule. If you haven’t used something in the past 90 days, and don’t anticipate using it in the next 90 days, you most likely don’t need it. Even though it’s easy to hold onto things “just in case” – especially if they have sentimental value – using your logic to decide if you’re actually going to use it is more effective in decluttering.

Stay Focused

Decluttering can be a very distracting task. If you’re going through an area of your home and come across something you forgot about or something that peaks your interest, it’s easy to stop the cleaning process and use or focus on that item. Don’t let yourself get derailed from what you’re doing, as that will make decluttering take much longer. Staying focused on the task at hand will help you be speedier and more efficient.
