You have a few quotes on your desk. One is high. One is low. One sits in the middle.
Which one is real? The price alone will not tell you.
Aaron Bros Moving System, Inc. has quoted Chicago moves since 1969. Here is how to read what you get.
Moving Companies in Chicago, IL: How to Compare Quotes and Services Line by Line
Put your quotes side by side. Look for these five things on each one.
- The full name and address of the firm
- A license number
- The date, start time, and truck size
- What is in the price and what is not
- How they charge: by the hour or by weight
If a quote is missing one of these, it is not a real quote yet. Call and ask.
Get It in Writing
A price by phone means little. A price by text means less.
Ask for a written quote. Ask for a survey first, in your home or by video. A crew that has seen your stuff can price it right.
We do a walk-through, then we write it down. No games at the curb.
Know the Three Kinds of Quotes
- Non-binding. The price can go up if the load is bigger.
- Binding. The price is set, even if the load grows.
- Not to exceed. The price can drop but cannot rise.
Ask which one you are holding. Then compare like with like.
Watch for Fees That Hide
Low quotes often skip the extras. Here is what can show up later:
- Long carry. The truck cannot park close, so the crew walks.
- Stairs. Some charge per flight.
- Shuttle. A small truck ferries loads when a big one will not fit.
- Bulky items. A piano, safe, or big tank costs more.
- Packing stuff. Tape, boxes, and wrap can add up.
- Fuel and tolls. Small line, real cost.
- Time of day or year. Weekends and the first of the month cost more.
Ask each firm to list these. A blank means a bill later.
Check the License and Cover
Moves inside the state fall under the Illinois Commerce Commission. Moves across state lines need a USDOT number.
Ask for the number. Then ask what the basic cover pays if a chair gets a dent. Ask what full cover costs. Get both in writing.
Compare the Service, Not Just the Price
Two quotes can match on cost and split on value. Ask each firm:
- Do you use your own crew or hired help?
- Do you pad doors, rails, and floors?
- Do you pack, or do I?
- Do you have storage if my dates slip?
- Who do I call on move day?
The answers tell you a lot.
When a Low Price Is a Warning
A quote way under the rest is a flag, not a deal. Watch out for these:
- A big cash deposit up front
- No address for the firm
- A price with no line items
- A firm that will not do a survey
- A name that changes on the paperwork
The Fair Way to Price a Move
We think a quote should be plain. You should know the price, the fees, and the plan before the truck comes.
That is how we have done it since 1969. Same crew. Same trucks. Same price we wrote down.
