Moving on a Budget. Nowadays, everyone can stand to save a little money, especially if you are getting ready to move. Here are some pointers to help you save money and move on a budget:
Start early! Begin to sort through your belongings as soon as you know you will be moving. This can lighten your load and potentially give you enough items to sell at a garage sale or to a secondhand store. Don’t forget to donate to charity as well and collect a receipt to be used as a tax deduction.
Local businesses like grocery stores, liquor stores, and electronic stores always have boxes on hand and many of these stores will kindly unload them for free. While asking for boxes, check to see if they have packing material too. Instead of buying bubble wrap and padding, use old blankets, towels, clothes or rugs to protect your items during the move.
Recruit family and friends to help with packing. If you have any children or pets, ask someone to watch them on your moving day without cost.
If you are flexible, move DURING the middle of the month while we–yes “we” because we are YOUR movers of course!–have off-peak rates.
Collect any deposits you made with your current utility companies at your current address. If you have a good payment history, you can request a “Good Customer” letter to show to the new companies, potentially waving any deposit they may require.
Hopefully these tips will leave you with extra cash so you can go out and enjoy your new neighborhood!
