How to Prepare for Moving: Checklist to Keep You on Track

Published by Derrick Spencer

Preparing for a move can feel overwhelming, but with a solid plan in place, it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re relocating across town or across the country, knowing how to prepare for moving starts with organization. A structured timeline ensures nothing slips through the cracks, helping you stay ahead of deadlines and reducing stress as moving day approaches.

Here’s a moving timeline checklist to help guide your planning and make your transition as smooth as possible.

6–8 Weeks Before Moving Day

Start early to give yourself time to plan and make informed decisions.

  • Create a Moving Binder or Folder
Keep track of estimates, receipts, and important documents.
  • Set a Budget
Factor in costs for movers, packing supplies, travel, deposits, and cleaning.
  • Research Moving Companies
Get quotes from reputable movers and check their reviews.
  • Declutter Your Space
Go room by room and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or toss.
  • Notify Landlord or HOA
If you’re renting, give notice as required by your lease.

4–5 Weeks Before Moving Day

Now’s the time to finalize your choices and start preparing your home.

  • Confirm Your Moving Date
Book your moving company and storage unit, if needed.
  • Order Packing Supplies
Purchase boxes, tape, labels, bubble wrap, and markers.
  • Begin Packing Non-Essentials
Start with items you won’t need until after the move, such as seasonal decor or rarely used kitchen tools.
  • Label Boxes Clearly
Include contents and the room it belongs in—this makes unpacking much easier.

2–3 Weeks Before Moving Day

This is where things start to take shape.

  • Change Your Address
Update your address with the post office, banks, insurance providers, and other important accounts.
  • Transfer Utilities and Services
Schedule shut-off and activation dates for water, gas, electricity, internet, and trash collection.
  • Arrange Child or Pet Care
If you’ll need help on moving day, now is the time to plan for it.
  • Continue Packing
Focus on everyday items and make sure fragile pieces are well-protected.

1 Week Before Moving

With only days to go, start wrapping up the final details.

  • Pack a Moving Day Essentials Box
Include chargers, toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, important documents, and snacks.
  • Clean Your Home
Deep clean your old space or schedule a cleaning service if required by your lease.
  • Confirm Details with Your Movers
Double-check arrival times, addresses, and access instructions.

Moving Day

Stay calm, focused, and ready for the last step.

  • Do a Final Walkthrough
Check every room, closet, and cabinet before leaving.
  • Supervise the Load-Up
Make sure boxes are handled with care and fragile items are clearly marked.
  • Secure Your New Home
Before unloading, ensure the new space is clean and ready.
