Not all crews are the same. Some are great. Some will let you down.

A few good questions will tell you which is which. Ask them before you sign.

Aaron Bros Moving System, Inc. has been a family-owned Chicago mover since 1969. We like these questions. Here is how we answer them.

Top Questions to Ask When Hiring a Moving Company in Chicago, IL

1. Are you licensed and insured?

Moves inside the state fall under the Illinois Commerce Commission. Moves across state lines need a USDOT number. Ask for both. We hand ours over with the quote.

2. How long have you been in town?

Years on the job mean the crew has seen your kind of move. We have run Chicago streets since 1969.

3. Is the crew your own staff?

Some firms farm out the work. You never know who shows up. Our crews are our own people. They are trained and vetted.

4. Can I get the quote in writing?

Always say yes to this. A quote by text is not a deal. We put it all in writing, line by line.

5. What could raise my price on move day?

This is the big one. Long walks to the truck, extra stairs, and heavy items can add cost. We flag those up front, not at the curb.

6. Do you know my building rules?

Towers here have lift rules and dock times. Old three-flats have back stairs. We deal with both all week long.

7. Where will the truck park?

Some blocks need a city permit. Some need an alley plan. We walk you through it before the date.

8. How do you keep my things safe?

Ask what they wrap and what they pad. We use blankets, shrink wrap, and floor runners. Doors and rails get pads too.

9. Can you handle odd or heavy items?

Think a piano, a safe, or a big fish tank. Ask if they have the gear. We do, and we say so up front.

10. Do you offer packing and storage?

Dates do not always line up. Ask what happens in the gap. We pack, and we store.

11. What if something breaks?

Every mover must offer basic cover. You can buy more. Ask how a claim works and how long it takes. We spell it out in plain words.

12. Can I see reviews or past jobs?

A good crew will have both. Read what folks in your part of town say.

Red Flags to Watch For
