Moving Glassware and Other Fragile Items

Published on April 22nd, 2020 by

Whether it’s your grandparents’ dishware set or the champagne glasses that you used on your wedding day, chances are, your home has fragile, meaningful items. If you’re in the process of planning for an upcoming move, it’s only natural to become overwhelmed by the thought of getting your fragile items from point A to point B without experiencing some casualties along the way. Our Chicago moving company has over 50 years of experience and can lend a hand with packing and moving your most prized possessions! Make sure to keep the following tips in mind for a successful move.

Don’t Overpack Each Box

It’s only natural to want to pack each box to the brim, but overstuffing your moving boxes and trying to keep them closed with extra tape is a recipe for disaster. Even if your individual fragile items are packed with bubble wrap, overstuffing them in a box will likely result in damage. Instead, opt for a few more boxes that can be packed with overflow items.

Pack Snugly

Glasses, cups and mugs need a bit of strategy behind them in order to weather the move. Although it’s time-consuming, wrapping each item individually is the best approach to keeping your items safe. You can even use multiple layers of packing paper to add another barrier of protection. When packing boxes with individually wrapped items, make sure that you’re packing the box snugly but not overly tight. This will help minimize rattling within the box on the day of the move.

Layer with Bubble Wrap

Bubble wrap will be your best friend while trying to pack your fragile items, but don’t use it as your only line of defense during your Chicago move. It’s ideal to layer wrapping paper and bubble wrap to maximize protection. For example, if you are packing glass plates, wrap them first in a layer of paper and place them in the box vertically. Put a layer of bubble wrap into the box between each plate to secure them.

Label & Prepare for Unboxing

Don’t only focus on the packing portion of the process, as you’ll want to simplify life for when you’re unpacking as well. It often helps to keep rooms packed within the same boxes. Make sure you’re labeling boxes accordingly and making a mental note of where fragile items are. This is especially important for when you’re packing the moving truck; you don’t want to set a heavy piece of furniture on a box full of fragile items.
