When Is The Best Time For Your Family To Move?

Published on March 5th, 2018 by

Moving into a new home or apartment is always exciting, but can also be a very daunting and difficult task. There is a significant amount of planning that needs to be done no matter what time of year you decide to move. However, if you are not on a strict timeline and have a more flexible schedule, there are a few factors to keep in mind while planning your move that will make things a little bit easier.

Time of Week and Year

Summer tends to be the busiest time of year for moving, which shouldn’t come as a surprise since people often want to take advantage of the nice weather and time off from school and work. Winter is not a great time to move either, as it is not only cold outside but winter weather conditions may make loading, unloading, and driving more difficult for you and your movers. The first of each month and weekends are busy as well and truck rentals and moving companies usually charge more during these times. So, if you have the option, we suggest scheduling your move during the middle of the week and in the spring or late fall. This is when it will be easiest and cheapest to hire movers and rental/storage companies will not be charging their highest rates.

Think About Your Kids

If you have children, it might be best to work around the school calendar, especially if your move means your child is switching schools. You want to make sure that your child has time to say goodbye to their house, neighborhood, and friends before you go. On the other hand, you’ll want to allow your children to adjust and settle in to their new home, and maybe make a few neighborhood friends before they have to start school. This will make the transition easier for the whole family.

Avoid Moving On Or Around Holidays

If you can, avoid moving around holiday time. Making a move close to any of the major holidays will make things more difficult for your family because it will be hard to coordinate with a moving/rental company, as many employees will take time off or the companies may be closed for the holidays. In addition, your friends and relatives may not be able to help you move because they will be busy with holiday plans. Moving during holiday season may also make things more stressful for you because instead of spending time preparing food or buying gifts for your holiday get together, you will be busy packing, loading, and unloading.
