How to Organize a Storage Unit

Published by Webmaster

Aaron Bros. is much more than just a moving and packing company- we offer four convenient self-storage locations as well! If you are considering investing in self-storage rental units with us or already have one, it’s important to organize it well so you can find everything easily and store everything safely. Read these tips so your valuables and large objects can be stored as efficiently as possible.

Make a List

One of the most frustrating feelings is when you know of a valuable item that you own but can’t remember where it is. To prevent that from happening, we recommend making an organized list of all the items you have in your storage unit. Especially if items remain there for several years, it’s easy to forget or lose track of them. You can also take pictures of what items are in the units so you have them stored on your phone or computer. This way, you’ll never have to wonder if you misplaced something important.

Use Clear Bins

While cardboard boxes are much less expensive, clear bins have a very optimal advantage. If you are searching for a specific item and it’s at the bottom of a box, you don’t have to dig down into every box to find it, and can instead just peer through the outside. If you have a lot of little items with a lot of boxes, using clear bins can make all the difference when you’re trying to find a specific item.

Disassembling Furniture

Since furniture takes up lots of space, it’s a good idea to take big pieces of furniture apart to maximize the space you have in the unit. Anything with table legs, headboards, or large parts should be disassembled and stored vertically.

We also suggest storing any furniture vertically, as that takes up significantly less space. It clears up tons of floor space for other items.

Label Everything

You’ll definitely thank us in the future when we recommend you label everything. You think in the moment that you’ll remember where everything is, but when it comes time to find something, you’ll have no recollection of what box or section it was in, especially if you have a lot of things in your unit. Particularly, if you opt for cardboard boxes and can’t easily see inside each box, labeling will allow for a much less frustrating time when looking for items.
