What Can You Do with Spare Boxes from Your Move?

Published by Webmaster

Moving boxes, paintings and furniture sit on the floor of a living room.

You’ve completed your move into your new apartment or home, and that’s great! But you also have a lot of empty, leftover cardboard moving boxes, and other than putting them out at the curb to be carted away to the local landfill, you’re not sure what to do with them.

Actually, cardboard boxes are pretty durable and versatile, and there are a number of things you can do with leftover spare boxes, aside from simply throwing them away. Here are a few ideas to consider.

Save and store them

This is a great thing to do with those boxes, especially if you think you might be moving again in the not-too-distant future. Just flatten and store them in a dry, cool place. And a couple of tips on storage:

  • When flattening the boxes, use a sharp knife to cut through any tape, don’t rip it off. Ripping the tape off can damage the boxes and reduce their usefulness.
  • Use a marker to name what was moved in each box. That way, they can be used for the same items the next time you move, making packing and moving much easier.

Loan them out

If you have friends or relatives planning a local move, they would be grateful if you let them borrow your stored, leftover boxes. That saves them the expense of buying moving boxes, and when their move is completed, they can return them to you for your own future use. Or, let them keep them if you don’t think you’ll need boxes any time in the near future.

Sell or donate them

If you would like to earn a little extra cash, you can place an online ad and sell boxes that are still in good condition. Someone who’s moving and on a limited budget would probably be glad to buy them from you at a cut-rate price, rather than having to buy new boxes. If you don’t want to sell them, find a recycling center in your area and donate them.

Use as inside storage boxes

Storage is the natural calling of cardboard boxes, and you can use them in your house or apartment for this purpose, and the appearance doesn’t have to look makeshift or shabby. Just cover the sides with wrapping paper or wallpaper, or perhaps burlap cloth for a rustic look. Voilà, you have some great looking storage boxes that cost you nothing and can be used in any room.

Organize your storage unit

If you don’t have enough room in your new residence for all your belongings, you may have to rent a storage unit. Those leftover moving boxes can be used for storage of extra possessions. Just make sure to label them so that you know what items are in each box.

Make toys for the kids

There’s nothing young children like much better than empty boxes, and with a little ingenuity you can make a large box into a castle or cabin that will keep them happily occupied for days to come.
